The Bewitching Hour: Using “Spells” To Boost Self-Esteem

Happy October! This is the time for golden leaves, black cats, pumpkin patches, full moons, caramel apples, cackling witches – and boosting your self-esteem. Learn how to “bewitch” yourself and boost your self-esteem this fall using these three easy “spells” for personal growth!

1. Mesmerizing Your Mirror

Speaking Positive Affirmations

Mesmerize yourself each day in the mirror with entrancing enchantments. Make it a daily ritual to stand in front of your mirror and recite positive affirmations to yourself, at least once per day, if you struggle with believing certain traits about yourself to be true. Start small and compliment yourself on your simplest abilities and work your way up to the most seemingly unattainable and intimidating qualities you wish to have. Visualize your reflection transforming into a more confident and self-assured version of yourself. Reinforce these beliefs by acting as if you are already all the wonderful things you wish to be.

If you can speak it, you can become it. Speak it into existence and cultivate it. Start with “I am”, then “I can”, and finally “I do”.

Affirmation Examples:

  • “I am worthy of love, success, and happiness.”
  • “I am confident, and I face challenges with courage.”
  • “I am a valuable and unique individual.”
  • “I can change the course of my life.”
  • “I can become anyone I want to be.”
  • “I can achieve anything I set my mind to.”
  • “I (do) get any job I want or need.”
  • “I (do) attract any romantic partner I desire.”
  • “I (do) afford whatever I want or need to buy.”

2. Conjuring Up Your Future

Practicing Self-Visualization

Gaze into your crystal ball and achieve clairvoyance daily by imagining yourself in your most ideal future, then act accordingly until you attain it. This doesn’t literally mean you need a crystal ball, but a mirror will do. Perhaps a blank canvas, a clear night sky, or a cup of tea. You can also just sit back, close your eyes, and use your imagination. Regardless of where you are, position yourself comfortably and lead yourself into a relatively peaceful state of mind. Then imagine yourself having, or becoming, anything you desire. Imagine yourself as a charismatic and confident individual, capable of achieving your goals, by envisioning yourself already at your desired level.

For example, you can imagine yourself driving the car you daydream over, or sitting in the new house you always wanted, or receiving your well-earned diploma, or holding hands with the person you fantasize about most, or being handed the paycheck you both deeply desire and need. Try not to imagine where you presently reside in relation to your goal, or what it will take to get there. Instead, just imagine yourself at the finish line. Imagine that whatever you desire is already yours. Feel the pride, excitement, joy, love, and comfort of having what you need and desire most. Remember how it feels to have those things, even if only in your mind, and approach each day believing it’s possible to achieve.

If you can see it and feel it, you can achieve it and attain it.

3. Invoking Supernatural Symbols

Reaching Your Goals

In this mystical self-esteem-boosting practice, you’ll create personal symbols, much like ancient talismans, that encapsulate your self-esteem aspirations and help you reach your goals. These symbols carry the magic of empowerment and self-assurance. To start, think of a meaningful, personal symbol that represents your self-esteem journey and the goals you wish to achieve. This could be an image, a word, or a combination of both.

For example, you can use an image of a set of keys (or a literal set of keys) to symbolize unlocking your potential, or to represent the house and/or car you someday wish to own. You can also mentally imagine the exact item you wish to buy with the money you are actively working to earn now, or use a picture of that exact item (or general type of item) to motivate your actions. Feel free to use physical and literal symbols to motivate you in the present as well as imagery. You can use a picture of yourself at your toughest time to propel you forward to better things ahead or use a sentimental object to embolden yourself with purpose. You can draw, make, photograph, or claim your symbolic item in any way that makes sense to you. Once you’ve chosen your symbol, it’s time to empower it with intention. Let this symbol represent what you need and desire most as a confirmation of its successful outcome.

As you go about your day, keep this symbol close. Whether it’s a piece of jewelry, a drawing, or a screenshot/display wallpaper on your phone, make sure you guide your thoughts towards your goal every time you encounter it. Remember what the symbol means to you in relation to your goal and use it as a source of quiet purpose.
